Pilot Site Visit: Waikīkī Aquarium
A family-oriented exploration where ʻohana groups discovered the animals and fish of Waikīkī Aquarium through hands-on scavenger hunts and photography.
Keiki-Centered Discovery
The tour at Waikīkī Aquarium was designed with keiki (children) at its heart. Rather than a guided lecture, the experience encouraged families to explore independently, letting curiosity lead the way through the aquarium's diverse exhibits.
Scavenger Hunt Adventure
Each ʻohana (family) broke into their own groups and embarked on a scavenger hunt to find different animals and fish throughout the aquarium. This activity turned learning into a shared adventure, with children and mākua (parents) working together to spot and identify marine life.
Capturing the Journey
Throughout the visit, keiki and mākua took pictures of their journey, documenting the creatures and moments that stood out to them. These photographs became personal records of the experience, reinforcing the connections made between families and the marine world.
Learning Through Exploration
By combining self-guided discovery with family participation, the pilot visit at Waikīkī Aquarium demonstrated how cultural and environmental learning can flourish outside traditional classroom settings. The scavenger hunt format kept keiki engaged while fostering observation skills and appreciation for Hawaiʻi's marine ecosystems.
This pilot program at Waikīkī Aquarium reflects the spirit of welina by inviting ʻohana to connect with the place and its inhabitants through their own curiosity. Grounded in the intersection of Native Hawaiian knowledge and contemporary science, the experience encourages keiki and their families to explore the aquarium's exhibits at their own pace, discovering the fish and animals that call these waters home. The scavenger hunt approach transforms a typical visit into an active learning journey, where each find becomes a moment of connection between the people, the land, and the sea. Such hands-on, family-centered experiences honor the deep relationship between kai and ʻāina that has sustained this place for generations.
